Can I Speak Frisian? (Frisian vs. English vs. Afrikaans)
According to linguistics, Frisian is the closest language to English. So, can I speak Frisian?
While the two languages aren't mutually intelligible, they supposedly have a lexical similarity of 50% to 70%, meaning English speakers should be able to recognize more than half of Frisian words. Further, Afrikaans and Dutch have almost 90% lexical similarity with Frisian, and I have studied those two languages for more than 10 years.
In this video, I conduct a little experiment with written and spoken Frisian to see just how much I can understand even though I have never studied it.

What is The Gay Male Accent? (And Do I Have It?)
Просмотров 22 тыс.28 дней назад
It is said that we can find out if a man is homosexual just by listening to his voice? Does that then mean that a "gay male accent" exists? Well, kinda. "Gay Male Speech" has been studied in linguistics for over thirty years, but we are not any closer to understanding it now than we were thirty years ago. While the stereotype of a high-pitched and flamboyant voice with a lisp exists, we don't s...
Is Scots a Separate Language From English?
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.2 месяца назад
Scots is a distinct language spoken in Scotland. Or is it? On an official level, Scots is a recognized language by three separate governing bodies as well as Scots speakers. On a linguistic level, however, linguistic distance and mutual intelligibility suggest that Scots is just a politicized dialect of English. So, what is the truth? In this video, we will look at the arguments for both sides ...

When speaking of a common language, it is always insisted on the Croatian language standard. And this standard is just one face of multidimensional language, like Serbian language, is also one face of multidimensional language. In Croatian, these are Kajkavian , Chakavian and Stokavian, and in Serbian it is Stokavian and Torlac. And here we already see dimensions that are less overlapping. And our language standards are similar because of conscious alignment within the South Slavic project in the 19th century from the Vienna Agreement, through Novi Sad, to this last Sarajevo agreementi, when, for political reasons, more distant languages tried to equalize as much as possible . If all of this could be interpreted in one language, there are almost more arguments to be interpreted as Croatian rather than Serbian, because Vuk Karadzic, as a mythical figure who should testify with the power of his authority that all of this language was Serbian, actually copying his dictionaries from existing Croatian dictionaries and ancient language manuals. From this, Serbian complexes, for example, when the old Dubrovnik literature were taken, because in those times, when Gundulić, Držić andothers wrote, there are no pandans to that level of high literary achievements in Serbian literature, and there is a kind of post-traumatic stress syndrome from the absence of their own, not very rich literary heritage, so it must reach out to someone else’s.s

I do not, however, mean to imply that gay men "talk like women". It is an accent unto itself, and certainly not everyone uses it. My brother didn't.

This is definitely a documented thing. BC, the Prairies, Anglo Quebecers and Newfoundlanders tend to have little or no pre-nasal raising of the short-a sound. Ontario and Nova Scotia have considerably more. Americans have lots of raising too. Add this to the Canadian Vowel Shift, and I can often tell if someone is Canadian or American from the way they pronounce their a's.

I would say that a gay accent is something one acquires. One of my college roommates 'came out' in his Senior year. Prior to that, there was nothing particularly 'gay' about him. But after his coming out, his manner of speaking and body movements became decidedly more 'feminine'. Clearly this was a deliberate affectation, not something that just came naturally.

If you ask me Tamil is the oldest language, but Sanskrit is much more phonetic language than tamil. Tamil is more confusing language in writting script than Sanskrit. Tamil doesn't have difference in ka, kha,ga, gha the same for ta, tha, da, dha and so pa, fa/pha, ba, bha etc. There is only 1 letter for the same and in Sanskrit there are different letters to learn but are specific and have dentol sounds specific. For Example: Ganapati in Tamil it will be written as Kanapati same goes for Dosa it is writtern as Thosai but to understand everyone they write it as Dosai. Same for Devika they will write as Thevika, Vinod as Vinoth etc. Even in Tamil there is no two letters joined. Example: प्रचार they will write as pirchar पिरचार. Same for बुद्धीशाली they will write as पुतीसाली as tamil does have ब so they need make it as प.

I think it is a perfectly legitimate question apart from the "they" (gay people are not a party ;) ). In a world where homosexuality is accepted we would not need to express our preference through coded language as hacking or bypassing a straight communication system would be unnecessary: the more gay men are integrated and liberated, the less they need to communicate through crypted codes. The "gay voice" (which also changes over time and changes from country through country) is somewhere in that evolutionary process. Then if u identify as a woman it's another matter obviously but that is unrelated to homosexuality.
